Glitz and glamour filled North Vancouver’s Griffins Boxing & Fitness gym on November 8th, when athletes, community supporters, and local celebrities came together for the 9th annual Evening at Ringside charity gala.
Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver was thrilled to again be the beneficiary of this event, which raised over $13,000 for youth mentorship programs. Themed to the Roaring Twenties and The Great Gatsby, a memorable time was had by all. Starting with cocktails and photos on the red carpet upon arrival, guests were then treated to a fabulous dinner and live band, before the main event of seven rounds of live boxing.
Dave Brett, owner of Griffins Boxing & Fitness, is a big supporter of Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. He cites mentorship, along with boxing, as important in helping him positively channel his energy and emotions as a youth. Thanks to him, countless other young men and women are now able to use sport and fitness as an outlet at the largest boxing gym in the region.
Guests at the gala were impressed by Ryan “Sully” Sullivan’s skillful hosting, and by “Mr. O Canada”, Mark Donnelly, who perfectly set the stage for the boxing to begin. Throughout the night, silent and live auctions gave guests a chance to start their holiday shopping early. The highlight was crowd favourite Tony Drescher auctioning off the shaving of his 40 year moustache! The impressive evening concluded with the awarding of the coveted Jimmy Filippone Belt to 2014 winner, Verita Sorsby.
The funds raised from the event will help put mentors in the lives of children and youth all over the Lower Mainland. Currently, almost 100 boys are waiting to be matched with Big Brothers. Thanks to the support of valuable partners like Griffins Boxing & Fitness, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver will be able to bring valuable friendship to more children this year.
