Here at Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, we pride ourselves in helping children build long-lasting friendships with their mentors. So it’s hardly a surprise that our supporters also know a thing or two about loyalty. This April, Haywood Securities is celebrating its 22nd year of participating in in the Scotiabank Bowl for Big Brothers Classic.
“It all started as a challenge from Scotiabank,” explains Tom Seltzer, Vice President and Director of Haywood Securities. “They challenged us to form a bowling team, so we signed up. Every year, we heard more stories about how life-changing these mentorship programs are for kids, so we just kept coming back.”
In addition to their decades-long commitment to helping children, multiple bowlers from Haywood Securities belong to the $1000 Club – an accolade reserved for bowlers who raise over $1000 in donations in a given year. Seltzer himself has achieved this status many times.
“It’s a little bit of time and effort for a really great cause,” says Seltzer. “My Dad was my greatest mentor. I can hardly imagine what it would be like for a kid not to have a good mentor.”
As a Bowl for Big Brothers veteran, Seltzer offers this advice to those who are “on the fence” about starting a bowling team: “Go through the process once. I think you’ll be hooked.”
