Mentoring with Math is an 8-week program for students in grades 3-7 who are struggling with math concepts at or below their grade level. Each Mentoring With Math session is 90 minutes, made up of two parts. During the first half of the session, students are mentored using a variety of techniques based on the principles of the JUMP Math numeracy program to encourage an understanding and love of math. In the latter half of each session, students are encouraged to interact with one another through games and activities designed to encourage fun and socialization with peers. Through a safe, fun, and positive environment, students look forward to working together to learn and apply their math skills.
Who tutors the children in the program?
Mentoring with Math volunteer mentors are fully screened adult volunteers who are trained to provide math tutor support by Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver. The mentors are not professional tutors, but volunteers who enjoy math and have a desire to support the children in our community. The volunteer mentors support the students only during program delivery, and personal contact information is not exchanged.
