How long will it take to get a Big Brother for my son?

Our agency strives to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved. Consideration and care must be given to finding the right Big Brother for your son. It can take several months to find someone with common interests and the right personality.

Depending on where you live, matching your son with a Big Brother may take longer in some areas than others. This is due to the fact that there are fewer Volunteers in certain areas of Greater Vancouver.

Although it may take some time to find the perfect Big Brother for your son, we promise it will be worth the wait!

Will my son be safe with his Big Brother?

We take every precaution we can to ensure your child’s safety. We carefully screen all Volunteers. They must provide four references (professional and personal references who can speak to the Big Brother’s experience with children), and go through a criminal records check. In addition, they go through a lengthy interview process and training session conducted by our qualified staff.

The agency has strict guidelines about responsible Big Brother behaviour. Participation in our Safety Awareness Program is required of you, your child and all Volunteers. We provide an information package for families and Volunteers. Our Mentoring Coordinators will provide ongoing support for you and your son throughout your involvement with the agency.

What happens after my son is paired with his Big Brother?

Big Brothers spend 2-4 hours each week with Little Brothers. We ask for a one-year minimum commitment from both the family and the Volunteer.

Once your son is matched with a Big Brother, you will be assigned the Mentoring Coordinator responsible for your area. Your dedicated Mentoring Coordinator will provide ongoing support and will monitor the match through regular phone contact with all parties. This is expected as are regularly scheduled meetings to discuss the progress of the friendship. Your Mentoring Coordinator is available to deal with any questions or concerns you may have.

We also provide agency-sponsored events so that Big and Little Brothers can meet other matches. A couple of times per year, we invite moms and family members to join in on the fun.
