BIG BROTHERS: MOMS BENEFIT TOO

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver is known for their mentoring programs benefiting children aged 7-12.  What is not commonly known is how often the program benefits the mothers of the children in them.  One such mother is Gini Guo.

Gini is a regular caring and loving parent who wants to do the best she can for her child.  When meeting her, there is an obviousness of strength, honesty and humility.  These qualities were tested when she considered the Big Brothers program for her son, Chris.  She had to accept that “no matter how great a Mom I was, I could not replace a male role model for my son in a consistent manner.”

Gini was born in China and moved to San Francisco at the age of 21 where she married and had Chris.  When the marriage became unhealthy, Gini left and took on the responsibility of raising her son as a single parent.  When Chris was three, they moved to Vancouver and now consider it their true home.

“I’m a better mom, a focused career person and a happier woman,” explains Gini.  “Because I know my son is doing well, this has empowered me more.  We consider ourselves very lucky to be a part of the Big Brothers program.”

During the first meeting with Chris’ potential Big Brother, Steve, Gini had a great impression but was also leery… because Steve is a lawyer!  Gini recalls her stereotypical skepticism with laughter. “I asked Steve lots of tough questions but he answered them sincerely and patiently,” she explains.

What changed her mind was when Steve advised why he wanted to be a Big Brother.  Having immigrated to Canada as a child from Taiwan, Steve credits his success today to a number of mentors who helped him as a child.  He wanted to give back to the community and hopefully have the same impact on another young child.

“I was concerned as my son was very vulnerable at that time and I told him I would stand behind whatever decision he made,” informs Gini.  “He really liked Steve, which was rare at that time for him to like someone new right away.”  Chris’ immediate fondness for Steve is what eventually made Gini accept  Steve as his Big Brother.”

Soon after Chris started spending time with Steve, Gini began noticing immense changes in her son.  He is far more involved in outdoor activities and sports and even voices his own opinion regularly, expressing his appreciation for Steve through his artwork.  Gini notes he is also more confident and inquisitive.

How has the friendship helped Gini?  She explains, “The relationship has provided great stability for the mental and emotional growth of my son.  It’s helped me address my prejudice, trust more as a single woman and be more open to the community.”
